Secret Love#Chapter 3

P.C. – Google

Monica woke up exactly 2 minutes before the scheduled time for the alarm. And to her surprise, this happened every morning. How her sleep was synchronised with the alarm for the next morning. She felt lazy for a while, and stared at the darkness of the room, which was infiltrated by a thin white morning light. That made her realise that it was time to leave the bed, and get into action.

She was almost back to her normal self from yesterday’s eventful day. Her sleep definitely helped her overcome the tremor that Max had caused by coming back in her life. She knew it very well, it wasn’t easy to let go. But she had made up her mind to be firm and unyielding, and to not let her thoughts sway in the direction that was owned and ruled by Max. As she turned with affirmation, she noticed her tired husband stepping out of the study. It seemed he didn’t sleep last night.

“Were you working the whole night”, she asked Robert.

“Yeah, I had few things to wind up”, Robert answered promptly. “I am taking the day off, and we could go out together”, he added.

A wife in this case would be normally delighted, but Monica could sense suspicion. Robert would never take a day off, even though he hadn’t slept since a week. Apart from being a great father and an amazing partner, he was a workaholic. She knew it very well.

“What’s wrong?” Monica enquired in surprise.

Robert tried to answer casually, “Just like that. Can’t I spend some quality time with my beautiful wife?” He tried to appease Monica’s eagerness and on the other hand tried to sound normal. But inside, he knew how disoriented he was. Not even a single second went by, where he had not thought about Max last night. He didn’t know how bad it was going to be, but it was back again. So, he needed sometime with Monica, to see her and observe her, before he called the psychiatrist. Well till then, he had to behave relaxed, as if nothing had changed. And this was going to be a challenge, as inside his heart ached and his eyes longed to shed the pain, which was not permissible.

Robert suggested to drop Neel to the kindergarten, and asked Monica to be ready by then. “Let’s begin our day with breakfast at your favourite baker”, he exclaimed with feigned joy. He left with a heavy heart, and drove his son Neel to the kindergarten, who was too excited, as his dad was dropping him to kindergarten unlike every day. Neel kept talking the whole way, and Robert managed to smile and mutter “hmm”, while his mind was completely lost in the thoughts of the upcoming days. The only thing he could think of was calling Monica’s sister Julia.

That gave him the strength, and he made the call immediately. The tears rolled down his cheeks, as Julia picked up the call. He uttered, “Max is back in our lives. I thought it all ended last time, but he is back.”

On the other hand Julia was paralyzed, as she heard that name. She gathered herself and her strength as well, and said, “You don’t worry. Everything will be fine. I will be there by evening, and we will figure this out together”.

He right away said, “No! Just let it be. Let it all appear normal. Your sudden arrival will make it worse, just like the last time. I saw the doubt in Monica’s eyes, when I took the day off. I will stay with her the whole day, and keep filling you in.”

“Okay”, said Julia realising that Robert was right.

“Well, now I need to rush back home. She is waiting for me. Will talk to you later.” Said Robert and hung up. This small talk had given him immense strength to fight with the current situation. He drove back home thinking about that dreadful incident that took away his best friend, Max forever from their lives.

Secret Love#Chapter 2

The bang of the pendulum awoke Monica from her day dream. She frenziedly looked at the time, it was already 12 o’clock. She wondered, how she was so lost, had no clue that the time was passing. For her it had stopped the moment she saw Max. But, this was it. She had to rush to the kindergarten; she had to pick her son Neel up. She interrupted Max and said; “I am sorry Max, I need to leave. I need to pick my…” and she stopped. She couldn’t complete her sentence. It was so perfect, meeting him again, and she really didn’t want to get back to the reality that waited for her back home. But the biggest truth of the moment was that she had to leave. And she got up and left, but pondering about everything that just happened. She had so much to say, but she was unable to utter anything the moment she saw him for the first time. Ever since, she was just listening to everything he said. She was so furious about how he left her alone, and never looked back. But where did the feelings and emotions disappear. Half-heartedly she started the car, and just rushed towards the kindergarten to pick her son up.

Neel as usual ran towards his mom as soon as he saw her. He jumped in her arms and hugged Monica tight and exclaimed loudly, “I missed you momma, I love you”.

“I love you too baby”; she said and kissed him everywhere.

They rode back home and Monica got back to her routine. But her heart was somewhere else. She was so baffled with herself, the way she reacted when she met Max. At this moment she really couldn’t understand herself, her stupid behaviour. Somehow the time was not passing. She wanted to go back in time, and make it right. She actually wanted to yell at Max, and reprimand him for all that he had done. She wanted to tell him, how she survived for the next two years after he eloped. But it was not what she did, infact she acted the same way she used to 10 years back, when they were dating. He used to always make mistakes which made her mad, but the moment she saw him her anger meter went down. Things used to be always different when he was around.

Suddenly, Neel disrupted her thoughts by shouting “Momma stop”, and she was taken aback when she saw what she had done.  She kept pouring water in the glass which was brimming with water, and spilled it on the table. And then she realised the impact of Max, and she talked to herself, “It’s enough. Now stop thinking.”

She thanked Neel for stopping her from flooding the house and asked him to go to his room and play with his toys. She got back to the kitchen preparing the dinner, forcibly controlling her thoughts from ruining the evening and probably also the meal that she was preparing.

As everyday Robert, Monica’s husband was back from work at 6, and Neel rushed to welcome his dad the same way he welcomed Monica a while back at kindergarten. Monica smiled at him and they kissed each other hello. He as usual asked her, “So, how was your day?”

She couldn’t stop but said, “You won’t believe how my day was. You will also be stunned whom I met today, the same way I was.”

He promptly asked, “Whom?” She could sense the eagerness in his eyes.

She immediately replied, “Max”.

This name left Robert speechless. As if he just swallowed his own tongue and couldn’t utter a single word. He tried to reconfirm, “Who again?” Right now, he doubted his sense to hear big time.

“Max”, she said. “I knew you will be as shocked as I was. He is back in our life.”

Robert tried to keep his expressions as normal as he could. But he very well knew his life was going to change.

Secret Love, Chapter#1

Morning was always the best time of the day for Monica. She adored the fresh smell of the flowers in her garden, and the melody of the birds chattering in a group, just like a group of teenagers meeting after long and carelessly chitchatting and giggling. But she never had thought that this morning was not going to be the usual one. It was about to bring a tremendous change in her well settled life, in her cozy little house with the most beautiful and loving family.

After finishing her morning chores, she left for the supermarket. It was the usual music playing, while she was driving, and she just thought to stop by the new store that she wanted to visit since almost a month now. Many times she planned it with Tina, her best friend but somehow it never worked out. So this time she didn’t think twice, and entered the store with curiosity. It was a huge boutique with the most fashionable dresses and accessories, with breathtaking prices. “Oh! That’s expensive”, she thought, that suddenly a husky voice that uttered ‘Moni’ interrupted her thoughts. ‘Moni’, she wondered, as this could be only Max, the spoiled brat from her college, whom she dated and it didn’t end so well.

She didn’t feel like turning back and facing him. Infact she felt, if somehow magically she could just disappear. But why was her heart thumping so loud as if ‘she was a teenager who suddenly bumped into her crush,’ she unknowingly smiled after thinking.

All these thoughts clouded her head so bad that she didn’t realize that Max was standing right infront of her. Yes, in person, looking the same, didn’t even change by a single inch. “Hi Moni”, he jumped with joy and embraced her in delight. “Look at you, you look the same, so beautiful”, he expressed his joy.

Monica very well knew how good was Max at lying and handling even the worst situations with ease. “She was definitely not beautiful today”, she thought and tried to comb her untidy hair with hands. For a moment she was speechless and couldn’t think of what to say. Suddenly realizing how rude it would appear, she cleared her throat and meekly asked, “Hi Max, how have you been?”

“I am doing great”, he sounded exactly how he felt. “It’s so great to see you. You made my day. Why don’t you join me for coffee?”, he insisted. Before Monica could deny, he called for help and ordered two coffees. It was so typical of Max, he would always do what he wanted. “Come let’s go to my cabin, we can talk in peace there. I have so much to tell you”. Monica kept wondering, how could he be so normal? How could he forget everything that happened. Even though she didn’t want to talk to him ever in her life, she followed him helplessly like a little girl. He opened the door for her like a gentleman and escorted her to his richly designed office, with some finest furnishings she had ever witnessed in her entire life.

The door shut after them, and they began to talk. It was mostly Max talking and Monica just mesmerized by everything around her including Max.

The Tea Cup !! a short story…

via Daily Prompt: Tea

P.C. – Google

Mrs. Kulkarni had been busy since morning, getting the whole house arranged and cleaned. After all both her NRI kids, Smita and Rupesh were supposedly arriving the next day. In her excitement, she forgot to serve the evening tea to Mr. Kulkarni, who had been waiting for it since almost an hour. At last he lost his patience and thought to prepare it on his own. As he was heading towards the kitchen, the beautiful bone china teacups, displayed in the glass showcase caught his attention. With a sarcastic smile, he moved ahead. He was thinking, how he was never allowed to drink in those cups. How his wife, Uma had been waiting to take it out only for some special guests. His thoughts were interrupted by the tinkling of Mrs. Kulkarni’s bangles. She was already in the kitchen preparing tea for him. With guilt on her face she said, “Sorry, for the delay. Smita’s room had to be perfectly arranged. You know how fussy she is about her things. Even if a photo of hers is missing, she will go crazy and I don’t want to spoil her mood. After all she is coming home after two years. I want everything to be perfect for my kids. It has been so long since we saw them both. I am glad they both decided to come home together.”

“Look at the tea Uma”, Mr. Kulkarni suddenly interrupted. “Whenever you think about your kids, you just forget everything. Even me”. He sulked like a child, who craves for attention. “Today I want to drink tea in those favorite bone china cups of yours. Consider it a penalty for the delay in my evening tea”.

“Uff, Day by day you are turning into a kid. Who would believe, you are already a grandpa”. She said mockingly. “Okay. Let me bring those tea cups. But remember to wash them properly and put them back in place after drying”.

Mr. Kulkarni was shocked. “How did Uma agree so easily? She is so possessive about those cups.” He thought. “May be she is so elated that her brain has stopped working”. He smiled upon his victory and rushed towards the balcony with his cup served with hot tea before Mrs. Kulkarni changes her mind. They both sipped the tea from their cups waiting for the sun to set soon. “Every moment is passing so slowly” They both said together and laughed at each other’s impatience.

It was going to be a long night for them, waiting for the morning, to get up and rush towards the airport. Mrs. Kulkarni as usual woke up at 6, and headed towards the kitchen. She had loads to do today, cook everyone’s favorite dish. Hurriedly, she finished most of her work and looked at the watch. It was 7:30 already and it seemed that Mr. Kulkarni was still sleeping. “What is wrong with him? Day by day he is behaving weirder”. She thought. Her anger was unstoppable when she saw that Mr. Kulkarni had not put back those tea cups in the shelf. Surprisingly, in a minute her anger was dissolved in the memories of last evening’s tea. It was a beautiful evening they spent together sipping tea from those beautiful tea cups talking about their kids. How they both proudly talked just about the kids and how they raised them to be such successful adults.

Finally, she served the morning tea in those beautiful bone china cups again, thinking in exasperation, “It is the last time I will serve him tea in these cups”. It’s just that she didn’t want to ruin this beautiful morning and so she headed towards the study.  Mr. Kulkarni used to sleep in the study most of the nights after reading his novel. As she entered the study, she saw Mr. Kulkarni hanging from his rocking chair, and his favorite book on the floor. “Ravi”, she screamed dropping the tea cup, and rushing towards her husband. She hugged him and rested him on the chair, but it was too late. His body was pale and cold, and she howled in agony looking at him and then at those broken pieces of the bone china on floor. “Yesterday was indeed the first and the last cup of tea in those preciously preserved cups”, she thought.
